Spring

Happy Spring! Is this the first “real spring” New Jersey has had in a long time? Not really; with a few March temperatures reaching in the mid 70′s our “May flowers” are almost expired before trees have leafed out. A mild winter and current erratic temperatures could wreak havoc on trees, shrubs and lawns. Certain insects that would have died off in a deep freeze didn’t. And trees and shrubs that need the deep cold to hybernate and harden off, may not have.

Tree Spray

Hemlock trees and Evergreens off to a rough start

Hemlocks and other evergreens which have been battling Wooly Adelgid and other insects are at the disadvantage of not having a deep winter freeze. To combat the problem, a Horticultural Oil should be applied to smoother the egg masses. Horticultural Oil is safe for the environment with having super-beneficial powers to control destructive pests. Connect to our facebook page for photos and more information Like us on Facebook

Tick Population

Tick populations, which have been trending steadily upward in our area, are also projected to climb as a result of mild temperatures. Tick Applications can be applied monthly, or you can select the months you , your family or pets spend the most time outdoors.

It’s not too late…

If you have not signed up for your Annual Tree Spray Program, (proposals were mailed in January) please call our office to receive another copy, add sprays, or discuss the needs of your property with an arborist. If you have never sprayed, or if it’s been a while, we are here to answer your questions and address your concerns!

Tree Feeding

The Fall months are the ideal time to Deep Root Fertilize the trees and shrubs on your property.
Tree feeding is a wise investment because it:

• Promotes rapid growth of newly planted trees for quicker health and beauty.
• Invigorates weak, declining trees.
• Provides greater structural strength to prevent storm damage.
• Builds tolerance to injury from insects and diseases.
• Increases flower and fruit production in some tree species.
• is very affordable.
The Deep Root Fertilization process injects fertilizer and micro nutrients into the root zone of the tree for easy absorption and aeration of the soil. This process can be done until mid-December.

Fall is also the best time to Fertilizer your lawn. Lawn-Tech, Inc. can apply this very important application, even if you don’t maintain a seasonal contract with us. This application will strengthen the roots and is vital for the lawn to pop-up green and lush in the spring!

Japanese Beetles

Japanese Beetles

Grubs gone wild..

July 4th, Independence day, fireworks, barbecues and fun! It’s also about the time when you will start seeing Japanese Beetles. The last two years I have noticed the first Japanese Beetles around June 27th, but they don’t really start to cause problems until mid July to August. The Japanese Beetle traps should not be used for control; just monitoring.

Some species are more susceptible to this pest; Linden, Sassafras, Purple Leaf Plum, some Birch species, Cherry trees and Roses. There are other prone plants, but these are the primary hosts. If you see adult beetles, apply sprays properly and you will get sufficient control of this Mid-summer leaf chewing insect.

Speaking of Grubs…

Did you know that Japanese Beetles evolve from lawn grubs? Lawn grubs can do significant damage to the root systems of your lawn and then continue on their destructive life cycle as leaf chewing beetles. Applying a grub control to your lawn will reduce the cycle on your property. Trees should still be sprayed for further reduction and to eliminate those who fly in from neighboring properties.
